In the footsteps of Marie Curie

UNESCO-L'Oréal International Fellows are expected to go abroad to learn new techniques and bring them back to their country. Mounira Hmani, who was named an International Fellow 10 years ago, did exactly that and dit it susccessfully, developing a remarkable level of excellence and publishing in leading international journals. In 2012, Mounira - who is now an Associate Professor in Human Molecular Genetics at the Faculty of Sciences and Scientific Researcher at the Centre of Biotechnology of Sfax (Tunisia) - received a Special Fellowship '...In the footsteps of Marie Curie'

Working out in the “mussel gym” and unravelling the secrets of shellfish parenting techniques
In our laboratory, we joke that we work in a “mussel gym” because one of our current projects is to develop ‘energy budgets’ for our native New Zealand species of mussel Perna canaliculus.
Why, you might ask, would we want to create energy budgets for a species that seems so extremely un-athletic? Most shellfish are not exactly known for their athletic prowess!
And most shellfish are not really known for their parenting skills either… but you may be surprised if you read on! - No Comments

• Each year, 15 young women are encouraged through an International Fellowship to pursue their research abroad.
Those Fellowships give a boost to promising research and help the beneficiaries to build networks in the international community and acquire experience that they can later share when they return home.

2011 L’Oréal-UNESCO Pan Arab Regional Fellowships Call for Applications – deadline has been extended to 12 March
