UNESCO-L'Oréal International Fellows are expected to go abroad to learn new techniques and bring them back to their country. Mounira Hmani, who was named an International Fellow 10 years ago, did exactly that and dit it susccessfully, developing a remarkable level of excellence and publishing in leading international journals. In 2012, Mounira - who is now an Associate Professor in Human Molecular Genetics at the Faculty of Sciences and Scientific Researcher at the Centre of Biotechnology of Sfax (Tunisia) -  received a Special Fellowship '...In the footsteps of Marie Curie'

In our laboratory, we joke that we work in a “mussel gym” because one of our current projects is to develop ‘energy budgets’ for our native New Zealand species of mussel Perna canaliculus. Why, you might ask, would we want to create energy budgets for a species that seems so extremely un-athletic?  Most shellfish are not exactly known for their athletic prowess! And most shellfish are not really known for their parenting skills either… but you may be surprised if you read on!

The United Nations Decade on Biodiversity has begun; the mission has been defined and targets established.  The task is huge, however, and will require creative solutions from every possible angle.  Genetics will play its role by revealing how species work on the most fundamental level, allowing scientists to choose the best strategies for their protection, make them stronger, more resilient, and better able to defend themselves.

We are pleased to announce that applications for the 2012 UNESCO-L'OREAL For Women in Science International Fellowships are now being accepted.  The Fellowships are available to women doing doctoral or postdoctoral research in the Life Sciences outside their home country.

• Each year, 15 young women are encouraged through an International Fellowship to pursue their research abroad. Those Fellowships give a boost to promising research and help the beneficiaries to build networks in the international community and acquire experience that they can later share when they return home. This year, the International fellows have carried out their research in varied fields, at the forefront of the current scientific challenges and their projects fall under 3 main topics:

The Call for Applications for the 2011 Pan-Arab For Women in Science Fellowships has been extended to 12 March 2011. Ten fellowships will be granted to exceptional Arab women scientists, each of whom will receive US$20,000 as encouragement to pursue he scientific vocation.

There is still great potentials to be discovered and encouraged among women in science in Sub-Saharan Africa. This is now a priority, with the launch of the L’Oreal- UNESCO For Women in Science fellowships in the region!
