Imagination, Curiosity, Patience

Girls, don’t let anyone tell you science is only for boys! The future is full of challenges, and science needs the special talents of women to help us meet those challenges head-on.

Scientific research is one of the most challenging fields for young women. It requires imagination and curiosity as well as patience, and women scientists perform well in this domain. Research in the material sciences is rapidly expanding, but few women choose this field, perhaps because it requires, from the beginning, a background in mathematics, physics and chemistry, whereas women are traditionally supposed to perform better in the Humanities. I had the good fortune to have a father who encouraged me to study science, and I greatly enjoyed doing so. At the present time, scientists are needed more and more by our society, not only to face the challenges resulting from new developments in technology but also to face the challenges of sustainable development. Women have an important role to play in this arena. Girls should not be thwarted by the idea that scientific training is more suited to boys. Girls can do it, too!
